September = National Preparedness Month & Gift Card Giveaway from Clorox Ends 9/11

Did you know that September is National Preparedness Month?  Two years ago if someone would have asked me this I would not have known this, however the company I work for definitly prepared me for "National Preparedeness Month"!

I have teamed with Clorox to tell you all about "National Preparedness Month" and what you need to do to prepare.

I know this won't be the first time you have heard this, but disasters can happen anytime, anywhere whether they be planned (meaning that the news has prepared us) or not planned (meaning no warning from the news). I still remember here in my hometown, Gaston, and it came so fast and how it flooded.  No one really knew the extent of it and it happened so fast.  All the hurricanes, although we know they are coming, we don't know what damage or how to prepare.   You need to remember there are three critical steps to create an emergency plan for your household in case of an emergency.

Did you know that just being prepared is one way to be prepared? When designing your emergency preparedness plan, you can implement the following three easy steps:

  1. Purchase or build an emergency preparedness kit – Your kit should house enough supplies to last your household a minimum of three days for evacuations and 2 weeks for emergencies at home. Next week, I’ll offer specific tips on building a disaster kit with your family
    • Households should create or purchase an emergency preparedness kit with enough supplies for everyone to last three days for evacuations and two weeks for emergencies at home. Include things like: water, non-perishable food, flashlight, radio, first aid kit, a multi-purpose tool, important medications and copies of personal documents. You may also include household liquid bleach such as Clorox for cleaning and disinfecting and emergency water sanitation.
  2. Make an emergency preparedness plan – Schedule a meeting in your household to discuss what to do in case you are separated during an emergency. Choose two places to meet – one right outside the house and the other outside your neighborhood. Be sure to practice and review the plan twice a year!
  3. Get educated – Get to know the types of disasters (e.g. hurricanes, floods or forest fires) prevalent in your area so that you can better tailor both your kit and plan. Find out how local officials will contact residents of your city to advise of important safety information. AND, get first aid training. Learn critical techniques like CPR and how to use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED).
For more information please visit HERE and download the preparedness guide: Prepare Yourself Now for Peace of Mind Later.

There is going to be a Twitter Party on September 9th at 1PM CST to help to talk about being prepared because it is so important. Join us for a @Clorox Disaster Preparedness Twitter Party & Enter to Win $100 GC. http://bit.ly/apOcV7 #Preparedness Please RT

3. We always pickup outside, keep the kids away from the windows, have flashlights and candles near by, put our keys and cell phones in our pockets, watch the news constantly for updates, go to the store a day prior...
We would most likely use it on more batteries always in need of those!

My tip: set a date to rotate your supplies... also keep an inventory with expiration dates. Canned goods and liquids need to be rotated.

I like clorox on fb, and told them you sent me.

I prepare for disaster/emergency by having several gallons of bottled water, a pantry of canned goods, and a first aid kit.

I would put the giftcard toward an emergency radio/flashlight device - the kind that you charge with a hand crank.
